The medium of a wave is the matter a wave travels through.

So yeah, if you wiggle a rope, the medium isn't the air around the rope... the medium is the rope itself!

Sound waves can travel through multiple types of matter.

Typically we think of them moving through air.

But, they can also travel through water, with whales being able to communicate with sound in water. You can also hear muted sounds in a bathtub, for example.

They can also travel as vibrations through solid matter. Or, along a wire, for example with a tin-can-phone that kids may rig up.

Waves that require a medium in which to travel are called mechanical waves. A medium is the substance/matter/material the wave travels in. For example, sound is a mechanical wave. Sound can travel through the mediums of water or air or solid objects. All three of these are mediums through which sound can travel.

Answer 2:

A wave is a moving vibration through some material. That material is called the medium. Well known examples are the surface waves of water (water is the medium) and sound (air is the medium).

Electromagnetic waves such as light and radio waves may travel through free space. That is how we get the warmth and light from our Sun. Pressure waves need a distinct medium in which to travel - in which to generate their pressure. Sound waves would be an example, whough weather patterns also need a medium.

Vibration waves such as sound may also travel through a solid.

All forms of waves require a medium to propagate them, except electromagnetic waves:

  • sound waves, any compressible material (e.g. air, water, rock, metals)
  • electric waves, material with free charge carriers (electrons or holes, e.g. metals, semiconductors)
  • earthquake P waves, any compressible material (e.g. rock, buildings, metals, molten metal, water)
  • earthquake S waves, solids (e.g. rock, buildings, metals)
  • water waves, water
  • etc.

Electromagnetic waves do not require a medium as they just repeatedly transfer their energy back and forth between an electric field and a magnetic field.

There does not need to be a medium for some kinds of waves.

What type of wave requires no medium to travel through?

Waves need not require medium to travel through. Only Mechanical waves like sound waves require medium to travel through. Electromagnetic waves travel in vaccum like light waves. Some waves transmitted in a medium due to disturbances in the medium .

What do electromagnetic waves and mechanical waves have in common?

They can both travel through a medium.

Do radio waves need a medium to travel through?

Radiation doesnt need a medium because it travels through space

The matter through which a wave travels is called what?

a medium. but longitudinal waves do not have to travel through a medium. This is why transverse waves cannot vibrate through space.a medium. but longitudinal waves do not have to travel through a medium. This is why transverse waves cannot vibrate through space.

What happens when waves travel through a medium?

The molecule of the medium vibrates at the dirction in which the wave travels

What are three medium waves can travel through?

Not all waves require mediums to propagate.Sound waves can travel through solid, liquid and gaseous mediums, while, electromagnetic waves do not require any medium to travel through.

Why does a sound wave travel through a medium?

waves are easily travel in medium.....

What can waves travel through?

Sound waves need a medium to travel through - the medium may be solid, liquid, or gaseous. Electromagnetic waves (including light) can also travel through empty space.

What material do waves travel through?

They travel through a material medium.

Due mechanical waves need a medium to travel through?

Yes, mechanical waves do need a medium in order to travel. Other waves, such as light, do not (thus they can travel through space).

How mechanical and electromagnetic wave are different?

The biggest difference is that mechanical waves require a medium to travel through and electromagnetic waves do not.

Is it true. When waves travel through a medium they carry the medium with them?

No.
