This is an age old question. Philosophers and scientists have theorized for years, and research is still being conducted at places such as CERN in Switzerland. Google the term "God Particle". For the purposes of a high-school or first year college course, it is an atom. But know that this is not true. Atoms or composed of electrons, protons, and neutrons, which are all also composed of components, and so forth.
