Soft soil often indicates sandy or loam types of soil. It also indicates structurally weak soils, so you do not want to have any slopes steeper than one foot of rise to three feet of run ( horizontal distance ) .

If you are interested in a seal that will last a few centuries, you will want to blend about a half-inch of bentonite clay into a foot of soil and compact that on the bottom of the pond and up at least a foot above the designed waterline to prevent seepage over the top.

If you do not feel competent to use bentonite, you might try a plastic liner, but those only last a couple decades.

As the size of the pond grows into the range you mention, you may want to consult a professional since the investment is significant.
