The 1933 Gold Double Eagle was going to be the world's most valuable coin, but was never officially issued.

The first coin to sell for over US $1 million was a specimen of the rare 1913 Liberty Head (the "V") nickel, of which only five were struck. It is unusual among the rarest and most valuable coins in that it contains no precious metal whatsoever. It is currently the second most expensive coin ever traded, at $4.15 million.

The current record-holder is the 1804 Silver Dollar (which, despite its name, was actually struck between 1834 and 1860), a specimen of which was sold for $5 million in 2007.

Neither of these coins were ever actually released for circulation: the Liberty Head nickel was replaced by the first Buffalo nickel; and the 1804 dollars were minted as gifts for the kings of Siam, and Muscat and Oman, in hopes of securing trade advantages in that part of Asia.
