There are a number of cards that command high values:

1996 World Champion: This unique card was sold for $10,000 to a private collector in 2001. It is presumably worth considerably more at this time.

Shichifukujin Dragon: As with 1996 World Champion there exists only one copy of this card. It has never been sold.

Alpha/Beta Black Lotus: These typically start around $3000 for copies in played condition, $5000 for copies in excellent to near mint condition and, in some cases, copies nearing mint condition have sold for around $10-15k.

Summer Magic chase cards: Copies of Blue Hurricane have sold for as much as $8000. Serendib Efreet as well as chases rares such as Underground Sea are similarly expensive.

Richard Garfield event cards: Proposal, Splendid Genesis and Fraternal Exaltation all command prices in excess of $4000.

If you want the two truly most expensive cards in Magic: The Gathering, they unfortunately have no set price. This is because they are unique, and only one copy of each exist. These cards are:

1996 World Champion

and

Shichifukujin Dragon

"The 1996 World Champion was given to Tom Chanpheng of Australia for winning the 1996 World Championship. The card is encased in lucite, apparently floating above a silver globe. In 2001 it was sold to a private collector. One sheet of this card was printed, but all other copies were destroyed. Rumor has it that artist proofs of this card exist.

The Shichifukujin Dragon was created to celebrate the opening of the Japan DCI Tournament Center in Tokyo, Japan. All copies except for one were destroyed. The remaining Shichifukujin Dragon has been encased at the Tournament Center for public view together with the original artwork of the card. The Tournament Center was closed on February, the 28th in 2003, and the card was moved to the Hobby Japan Head Office where it currently resides. Shichifukujin is the name of the Seven Deities of Good Fortune of Japanese mythology."

The 1996 World Champion Card was sold for approximately $10,000 USD still in the trophy (keep in mind this is not adjusted for inflation, which increases the price even more). Serious Magic collectors nowadays would ostensibly pay far more for either card today, given the thriving popularity of Magic.

Other incredibly rare cards include the cards that Richard Garfield had printed for certain events in his life, namely his proposal to his wife and the birth of his two children. Information for these cards can be found here: see link

The most expensive non-error card is considered to be a signed, mint-condition Alpha Black Lotus, and can possibly be worth over $15,000.

The most expensive error card is indeed the Summer Magic Blue Hurricane, also valued highly.

One could argue that one-of-a-kind cards like 'Shichifukujin Dragon', or '1996 World Champion' should be the most expensive cards, but there is little chance of these cards ever becoming available on the open market. There's no way to price them, or guage demand.

There is a PSA Graded (Gem 9.5) Alpha Black Lotus on eBay for $100,000 and a Beta Black Lotus (BGS Graded - Pristine 10) for $89,000.

You can't find any legitimate proof of this, but based on supposition I would say Dragon tokens, due to people with token generators wanting an actual card for their 5/5's as opposed to tokens for 1/1's that'll be in and out much faster.

There are rare misprints from what is known as 'summer magic' which have sold in the range of $10,000 to $20,000

The rarest playable card is the 1996 Worlds Champion of which there is only one; the last known public sale of the card was for $15,000 it has since been kept in private collections and not been shown in public for more than a decade

The rarest card on public display is The Shichifukujin Dragon, a one of a kind card created for a special event in Japan. It has never been sold, but offers of more than $50,000 have been turned down.

Misprints and one-of-a-kind cards aside, the most expensive normal card in circulation is the Black Lotus. It has been printed in three sets (Alpha, Beta and Unlimited); depending on condition the Black Lotus regularly sells for $1,000 to $2,000 with a rare few mint condition graded versions occasionally selling for over $10,000

The rarest, and most expensive, Magic Card is the 1996 World Champion card. This card never appeared in a set but was given to the winner of the competition.
