Australia is not in any sea, but it straddles several bodies of water. Seas and oceans which surroun Australia include the following:

  • West of Australia is the Indian ocean and to the east is the Pacific Ocean.
  • South of Tasmania and Australia's southern coastline is the Southern Ocean.
  • North of Australia are the Timor and Arafura seas
  • To the southeast, between Australia and New Zealand, is the Tasman Sea
  • To the northeast is the Coral Sea.

The seas around Australia include:

  • the Tasman Sea, to the southeast, between Australia and New Zealand
  • the Timor Sea, to the north-northwest
  • the Arafura Sea to the north
  • Coral Sea, to the northeast

There are no inland seas in Australia, despite the attempts of many explorers in the 1800s to find an inland sea, which they were sure must exist.
