The top half of Arizona's state flag features 13 alternating red and yellow rays. These represent the original 13 colonies in America. The rays signify a setting sun. The rays were designed to be the same colors as the Spanish flags Coronado brought with him when he came to Arizona in the 16th century. The star in the center of the flag is copper-colored since Arizona is the largest producer of copper in the US. The bottom half of the flag is solid blue, the same blue color as the American flag. The flag was adopted in 1927.

Or:

Some call it gaudy.

Others say that it is vibrant.

Everyone can agree that it is certainly colorful.

It features a central copper colored star on a blue field, upper obscured by a thirteen ray sunrise in red and old gold to commemorate the original thirteen counties of the State. It is highly ranked by the Vexillogical Association and it is readily identified as a unique symbol that Americans know is representative of the Grand Canyon State.

Arkansas' state flag includes 25 stars since Arkansas was the 25th state admitted to the US. It was adopted in 1913 and designed by Arkansas resident Willie K. Hocker.

There are 3 stars below the "ARKANSAS" name in the flag because:

- AR was the property of 3 different countries (France, Spain and the US) before gaining statehood

- AR was the 3rd state created from the Louisiana Purchase by the US (after LA and MO)

- 1803 was the year of the Louisiana Purchase when the land that comprises AR was acquired by the United States

The star above "ARKANSAS" represents the Confederacy which Arkansas was a part of from 1861-1865. The 25 stars in the border form a diamond shape representing Arkansas' status as the first diamond-producing state.
