Nursing interventions for acute gastroenteritis include:

  • Assessment of pain location and intensity.
  • Assessment of bowel sounds.
  • Observe for vomiting / diarrhea.
  • Measure I/O.
  • Administer medications as ordered.
  • Manage IVs if ordered.
  • Teach why it helps to rest the gut with NPO or restricted intake.
  • Teach why re-introduction of liquids is first, with solid foods last.
  • Assess and teach contributing factors and ways to prevent a re-occurrence (unless caused by viral or bacterial infection).

Acute Gastroenteritis:

Number one rule- Hydration!

clear and simple fluids clean out the system...Dehydration will make the symptoms of nausea and vomiting worse... so keep drinking!

eww grose why dont u ask a docter #2 answ: Because diarrhea can becaused from anything from a bacterial infection to food poisoning to colon cancer, a doctor should be consulted (a Gastroenterologist in particular) to determine the cause of the diarrhea and what the best course of action should be.
