A New Testament perspective:It's important to understand that the New Testament speaks of the Christian's "religion" NOT as the word is used today (designating a "belief system"), but rather, as a living expression and practice of an individual's faith in Christ (James 1:27).

That being said, the oldest representation of a body of believers living by obedience to Jesus' gospel is the church described in the New Testament, which has no "official name." Scripture most often refers to it simply as "the church," as it was readily understood to be a "one and only" church (Ephesians 4:4-6), just as God has always been a one and only God (John 17:3, Jude 1:25).

Extended designations such as "church of God" (Acts 20:28) and "churches of Christ" (Romans 16:16) weren't various "names," but expressions of ownership; affirmations and reminders of whose church it was.

It is God's church; it is Christ's church (God and Christ being one and the same - John 10:30), and it came into being on the Day of Pentecost, circa 30 AD (Acts 2).

Many believe Christianity began in Jerusalem when God's Holy Spirit was freely given to all mankind. This has been dated to Pentecost Sunday, June 17, 31 AD. It was commonly called 'The Way' and was dubbed Christian in Antioch soon afterwards. There are at least 12 mentions in Scripture of 'The Church of God' usually at a particular location like the Church of God in Jerusalem, as the name of the first meeting places for the disciples of Christ.

Furthermore, there are many who would say the Roman Catholic Church is the first/oldest known religion but that did not occur until about 300 years after the above event. By this time, many of the apostolic ways had been changed, as well as some of God's Commands - in particular the 4th Command to 'Keep Holy the Sabbath Day' which from the renewal of the face of the Earth (see Psalm 104:30) and creation of mankind via Adam & Eve, was established and kept.
