In a typical electric power plant, the thermal energy produced by burning fuel is used to boil water or making steam. The mechanical energy of the steam then turns a turbine. The turbine is connected to a generator, which consists of powerful magnets surrounded by coils of copper wire. As the magnets turn inside the wire coil, and electric current is produced, This current flows through power lines to homes and industries.
