Pentecost started during the Old Testament times. At that time it was the Jewish feast days called the Feast of Harvest.

Additional Answer:

For the New Testament Church, some have dated this event (God freely giving His Holy Spirit to the disciples of Christ) as occurring in Jerusalem, on Pentecost Sunday (50 days from Christ's resurrection on Saturday), June 17th, 31 AD.

A:Acts of the Apostles says that on the day of Pentecost, everyone that was in the upper room, was filled with the Holy Spirit coming down on them as tongues of fire. They spoke in tongues as the spirit gave them the utterance. Christianity celebrates this occasion as the Day of Pentecost ('fifty days').

The Jews also celebrated a Pentecost, also known as Shavuot, from the second century BCE onwards and hence in Jesus' day, in memory of the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai. It takes place fifty days after Passover, just as the Christian Pentecost takes place fifty days after Easter. Numbers 11:25 tells us that on that occasion, the spirit of God came down on the seventy elders and they began to prophesy in ecstasy. There are enough parallels to the earlier account to raise doubts about the historicity of the Christian Pentecost.

If there are doubts about the historicity of the Christian Pentecost story, then we could say that Pentecost really began when the story was written in Acts of the Apostles and became accepted in the early Christian community as a historical fact.

Another Answer:

God gave His Seven Day Plan of Holy Days to the Congregation of Israel to picture for them His plan of Salvation for mankind. It was called the 'Festival of Weeks in Leviticus 23 and is also known as the Feast of the Firstfruits - those called in their lifetimes to become the future 'bride of Christ' at the marriage feast of the Lamb - the first to be changed into spiritual sons and daughters.

The Apostles and disciples were already gathered together when God gave His Holy Spirit to them (Acts 2). It became known in the New Testament as Pentecost but all three names are the same Feast Day, occuring 50 days (meaning of Pentecost in Greek) after Jesus' was resurrected (a Saturday as Pentecost is a Sunday - just do the math). It began the Church of God on Earth.

Another Answer:

On the day of Pentecost all the Lord's followers were together in one place. Suddenly there was a noise from heaven like the sound of a mighty wind. It filled the house where they were meeting. Then they saw what looked like fiery tongues moving in all directions, and a tongue came and settled on each person there. The Holy Spirit took control of everyone, and they began speaking whatever languages the Spirit let them speak.

What is the most important feast of the Church year?

Easter is the second most important day of the Church year. The most important feast day is Pentecost. Had there been no Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, the Church would never have gotten off the ground. Pentecost is considered the birthday of the Church. So Easter and Pentecost are both important feast days in the Catholic Church.
