Although the evidence actually suggests that Assassins probably did not use hashish in the way described by Polo, it does indicate that Europeans were familiar with cannabis as a
psychoactive drug in the 13thcentury . It is possible that from Hassan the term 'hashish' developed for the recreational smoking of cannabis; and the term assassin for those on expeditions to kill leaders of enemy factions.
