The Sahel (sometimes spelt Saheel) is a zone or belt that stretches west to east across the northern portion of Africa. The Sahel is a transition zone between the Sahara Desert to the north and the African Savannah regions to the south.

The Sahel is characterised by a marked change in vegetation (between the sparse Sahara) and the temporal Savannah. Rainfall averages 200mm in the northern portion of the belt to 600mm in the southern portion

says sahel is a dry arid region in Africa

Well, I say it is a stretch of semi-arid desert scrub that crosses Africa in an East West fashion and forms the border between the Sahara Desert and the grasslands of central Africa.

Considered as a whole, the Sahara is a rather low plateau with an uplifted center that has several mountainous areas. Elevations over much of the Sahara average only 1,000 to 1,500 feet (300 to 450 m) above sea level; in the central mountains a few peaks reach 10,000 to 11,000 feet (3,000 to 3,350 m). Except for the Nile and the Niger, which flow along the desert margins, there are no permanent rivers. There are numerous wadis, desert watercourses that contain water for only a short time after heavy rains.
