The polyatomic ion in KNO 3 (potassium nitrate) is NO 3 - , the nitrate ion. This ion is polyatomic because it contains four atoms bonded together. The nitrate ion is deriv…ed from nitric acid, HNO 3 .
Polyatomic ion in the compound Na2O2 is known as peroxide. Such polyatomic ion contains two or more atoms covalently bonded.
I'm pretty sure it's an ionic bond, but I might be wrong.
CO3 2- Carbonate.
If the compound contains a polyatomic ion, simply name the ion.
Formulas for ionic compounds with polyatomic ions are written just like normal ionic compounds would be written like. For example, lets say your ionic compound is Ammonium nit…rate. The formula for ammonium is NH 4 and the formula for nitrate is NO 3 . The chemical formula of Ammonium nitrate will therefore be NH 4 NO 3 because ammonium has a positive charge of +1 and nitrate has a charge of -1, thus becoming neutral and forms the ionic compound Ammonium nitrate. If your compound is something like Barium hydroxide, the formula would be Ba(OH) 2 because Barium(Ba) has a charge of +2 and Hydroxide(OH) has a charge of -1. In order to neutralize the charges, you need 2 hydroxides so the subscript 2 is present. The reason the subscript is outside the parenthesis is because the subscript 2 applies to both O and H in the hydroxide poly atomic ion.
NH 3 is the molecular compoundammonia. It is sometimes confused with the ammonium ionNH 4 + .
The chemical bonding within a polyatomic ion is covalent, but the polyatomic ions are bonded ionically to some other ions of the opposite electrical charge. Note that all the …ions in a compound can be polyatomic, as in ammonium acetate. The ammonium ions are positively charged and the acetate ions are negatively charged.
Ionic bonds are formed due to the transfer of electrons from one atom (metal) to another atom (nonmetal) to give oppositely charged particles called ions to attain a noble gas… arrangement.
In Chemical Bonding
When a molecular compound gains or loses electrons, it becomes a polyatomic ion.

Ionic compounds ammonium sulfate, has both a polyatomic cation NH 4 + and polyatomic anion, SO 4 2-
A binary compound is a chemical compound made up solely of 2 elements, for example P 2 O 5 , Na 2 O KCl. (The bonding is not relevant- it could be covalent or ionic.) A polya…tomic ion is a cation or anion that contains more than one atom. Most contain 2 different elements. For example . polyatomic anions:- [SO 4 ] 2- , [NO 3 ] - . polyatomic cation:-[ NH 4 ] + , [Hg 2 ] 2+
Examples include Magnesium sulfate: MgSO4 Sodium hydroxide: NaOH Ammonium nitrate: NH4NO3.
