Because much of China's area is sparsely populated or inhospitable to habitation, the actual density is much higher, in the 200-400 range. The cities and eastern lowlands are home to most Chinese. Excluding the cities of Hong Kong, Macau, and Shanghai, city density is being maintained at a maximum of about 800-900 people per km2 (Beijing and Tianjin).

Most of the population of China lives to the east, near the Pacific Ocean and between the Huang He (Yellow River) and the Chang Xiang Rivers. Then there are smaller populations to the west, north, and south. But the majority of the population lives near many water ways. This is because most of the original Chinese Dynasties originated in that area.
