Food Auturky refers to "national economic self-sufficiency in food"

Pakistan is essentially an agricultural country but is not self sufficient in food which is not a happy situation. The staple food of the overwhelming majority of Pakistan's population is grain and wheat is the most important. Wheat is used to measure Pakistan's self sufficiency in food, in which it is not self-sufficient.

Pakistan had been importing wheat between 1947 & 2000. In 2000, because of a bumper crop wheat was not imported, but, it still continues to import in spite of the fact that the area under wheat cultivation and yield has increased. The increasing production could not meet the needs of the population, which increased four times from 1951 to 1998 There is a heavy dependency on wheat which will remain so in the future.
