At any given point in a military operation, one branch usually needs to work with another, either in the same country, or that of her allies (e.g., NATO). Joint Operations help each force learn to work together and communicate so that any problems and procedural issues are dealt with before actual combat situations arise.

This was a huge problem during the Grenada Invasion, where the Navy, Marines, Air Force and Army were found to have equipment and procedures that didn't allow them to easily communicate with one another. You must have standardized equipment and procedures in order to function as a team in combat.
