The death penalty applies to adultery. This can be split into two questions.

1) Punishments in this world

2) Punishments in the afterlife.

1) The Torah gives authority to the Sanhedrin (Jewish court) to punish certain types of crimes. They are bound by careful procedure, they must have two witnesses, and the perpetrator must be warned before he sins; otherwise he is not punished by the Sanhedrin. Also, the Sanhedrin is enjoined to make a concerted effort to seek evidence that could exonerate the defendant. This means that they must be balanced and circumspect, no matter what the crime. Their role is not intended to be one of vengeance.

Shortly before the destruction of the Second Temple, the Sanhedrin ceased dealing with capital cases, because the increased persecutions of the Romans, and the onset of the present Exile, made it impossible to fully maintain the level of scholarship and expertise needed for the Torah-procedures of the Sanhedrin. Since then, the power of Jewish courts has been greatly diminished and is now limited to imposing fines, if anything.

2) Does Judaism believe in the existence of hell? The name and details are probably different than in other religions, but the short answer is yes. "And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcasses of the men that have rebelled against Me; for their worm shall not die, nor shall their fire be quenched" (Isaiah 66:24). One of the central beliefs of Judaism, as codified by Rambam (Maimonides, 1135-1204), is that the soul continues to exist after death and is treated in accordance with the person's actions while he/she was alive. All outstanding accounts are settled after this life. Some cases illustrate this point, since this entire world wouldn't be enough to reward a Moses or punish a Hitler.

The afterlife is discussed at length in the Talmud, though the exact nature of the rewards and punishments is generally not given since it would be like describing the colors of a sunrise to someone who was blind from birth.

It is important to note that Judaism is a rare case in that it does not condemn people of other religions to eternal damnation. Worthy non-Jews are able to earn the rewards in the afterlife without conversion.

Another important point is the efficacy of repentance, which can change one's spiritual "balance" relatively easily. See for example Deuteronomy 30:1-10 for one of the Tanakh's many passages on this topic.

Once the sin has been confessed and forgiven in confession, the person who committed the adultery has to do a simple penance, such as a prayer, that was assigned by the priest. Other than that, the Church does not hand out punishment. The punishment is time in purgatory after death unless plenty of penance for the sin is performed before death. Since adultery is a grievous sin, the sacraments cannot be received lawfully until the sin has been confessed. It is a grievous sin to receive the sacraments unworthily.

When God called out the Congregation of Israel, He desired to have them walk in His ways and His Laws - to be perfect like He is perfect. They were to become a 'showpiece' of how to live God's way. But they did not have God's Holy Spirit within them to help them achieve this task (only the Patriarchs, Prophets and those needed to achieve some task like the artisan who fashioned the Ark of the Covenant). The punishment for these 12 tribes was severe - death:

Leviticus 20:10New King James Version (NKJV)

10 'The man who commits adultery with another man's wife, he who commits adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress, shall surely be put to death.

As God's plan progressed through His Son coming as our Christ and releasing His Holy Spirit upon His Church - the Firstfruits - adultery is a serious sin but now one can fully and sincerely repent of it and follow the perfect way of Jesus Christ. By doing this, the sin is forgotten by God and the guilt is lifted from the person who now may continue to walk in God's ways and His Laws. King David is a good example of this.

In the Western World there is no civil punishment for adultery except perhaps giving the injured party grounds for divorce. There may be other consequences under military law.

A priest won't punish you. He is simply a servant of God. If you confess to him he may make you do a couple Hail Mary's. That seems punishment enough.

The usual punishment for adultery in Puritan society was public humiliation and death. Hester's punishment of wearing the scarlet letter was less severe because she refused to reveal the identity of her fellow sinner, which would have resulted in a harsher punishment for both of them. Additionally, her skills as a seamstress and her charitable work helped mitigate the severity of her punishment.
