What is the definition of robbery in Islam?

Highway robbery or robbery is defined as the activity of an individual or a group of individuals who go out in strength into the public thoroughfare with the intention of preventing passage or with the intention of seizing the property of passers-by or otherwise inflicting upon them bodily harm

Theft and robbery are two different actions. The highest Punishment for a thief is the chopping off his/her hand. The punishment for robbery/decoity/revolt are the same as treason against the authority of a lawful government. In this case the highest punishment may be putting the robbers to death.

Sending or hurling the thieves into hell in itself is a great punishment. However, Allah Almighty is the most Merciful, He may forgive us all. Let us expect His Mercy and Forgiveness. Let us think positively.
