∙ 11y agoThe best way to prevent your computer from slowing down is to try to keep it slim like your body. First remove any programs you do not use. Any programs you add will begin to slow it down, if you do not use a program but once in a blue moon then remove it...copy the loading disk and the serial number to an external hard drive in case you want it for future use. Added programs will slow down your computer. I recommend CCleaner for uninstalling programs and stopping un-needed programs from starting when your computer starts up. Then disable programs you do not want to run on start up. Next, this is where it gets controversial. You must be very careful about installing windows updates. These updates were not in your computer when you bought it, eventually they slow it down to a drag. I am typing this on a computer I bought in 2005 it has 2gb of memory, AMD 64x2 old technology. However I keep it lean with only Office and I use Firefox. A new computer can handle bloating it up with programs for about 2-3 yrs after that it slows like molasses in winter. That said there are things you can do to speed up a computer like add more RAM, replace the CPU with a stronger one if the mother board can take it. But the best hardware upgrade I will recommend is replacing your Mechanical hard drive with an SSD (solid state drive) look them up on Amazon, they usually come with cloning software that will clone your hard drive to the SSD and it will fit right in, same size and connection. I replaced this laptops drive about 6 months ago, I could simmer coffee while booting up, with the SSD it is about 30 seconds or less.
Remember to use a restore point when you feel your computer is running great, go back to that restore point when you see it starting to slow down. Also, huge external hard drives 2-3 Terabyte drives when they start to get full will slow down your system when plugged into the USB for this I recommend you use smaller external hard drives like 500GB for working purposes or use and external SSD drive. This is coming from 15 years experience in the technology and memory business. It is our business to keep you up grading your memory and hardware but I have a heart too so I am giving you these tips to keep your computer from slowing down. Keep your computer lean of programs you do not use and be watchful of bloated windows updates. Always backup your computer with the most functional version.

∙ 12y agoYou could also try to defrag your computer; Microsoft even recommends defragging your computer at least once a month, doing this can help the computer speed up. This maybe is the solution to the slow computer problem. If you are not performing this to your computer, then do it now. To defrag go to Programs then Accessories then System Tools and then Disk Defragmenter and follow the instructions.
