When rounding to a specific place, take a look at the digit immediately to the right of the target. If that digit is 4 or less, zero everything to the right of the target out. If that digit is 5 through 9, increase the target by one and zero everything to the right of it out. If the target is a 9, increasing it will turn it to zero and increase the digit to the left of the target by one.

The steps for bias-free rounding are as followsStep 1: establish where the number is to be rounded: this could be described in terms of significant figures or decimal places.

Step 2: look at the digits immediately after the one to which the number is to be rounded.

  • if the next digit (or the number formed from the next digit onward) is smaller than 5 then simply get rid of all those digit;
  • if the next digit (or the number formed from the next digit onward) is larger than 5 then increase the last digit of the rounded number by one and also get rid of all the digits after it.
  • if the next digit is 5 than round the last digit to an even number.

Although many schools teach you to always round 5 up. However, doing so is inappropriate because it introduces an upward bias. The IEEE (Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers) standard 754 is to round 5 up or down so that the new last digit is even. How many whole numbers can be rounded to 650?

When rounding off, the rule is, "If the first figure to be discarded is 5 or more then the previous figure is increased by 1. Following this rule then 650 is the result of rounding off numbers in the range 645 to 654. As 650 itself is not rounded off then there are 9 whole numbers that can be rounded to 650.

What is 0.115 to the nearest hundreds?

The rule when rounding off numbers is "If the first figure to be discarded is 5 or more then the previous figure is increased by 1". The first figure to be discarded is 5 and following the above rule : 0.115 becomes 0.12 when rounded off the 2sf

What is the answer to 1396 to nearest 100?

The rule when rounding off numbers is "If the first figure to be discarded is 5 or more then the previous figure is increased by 1". As we are rounding to the nearest hundred then the first figure to be discarded is 9. As this is greater than 5 then the previous figure (3) is increased by 1 (to become 4) 1396 to the nearest 100 is 1400.

The answer that rounds 36257 to the nearest multiple of a 1000?

The basic rule rule for rounding off to the relevant number of significant figures is :- If the first figure to be discarded is 5 or more, the previous figure is increased by 1When rounding to the nearest 1000 (which is the same as to the nearest multiple of 1000) then the first figure to be discarded is the digit representing the hundreds. In this question that digit is "2". As this is less than 5 then the previous figure is notincreased by 1.36257 is thus rounded to 36000.

How do you round 170.0875 to the thousandths place?

The rule when rounding off numbers is "If the first figure to be discarded is 5 or more then the previous figure is increased by 1". The first figure to be discarded is the 5 in the ten-thousandths place. Applying the above rule then :- 170.0875 becomes 170.088 when rounded to 3dp.

What is the greatest whole number that rounds to 300000?

599999 if rounding to the nearest 300000 with no rounding up to the nearest 300000 multiple. Granted normally you would not define your rounding rule that way, but there is no fixed rounding rule.
