There is no question that medical doctors are some of the highest paid specialists in America. A doctor's income can range from 80, 000 dollars a year to 2, 000, 000 dollars a year. Three factors that contribute to this difference in yearly income are a doctor's specialty, affiliation, and ownership in a private practice medical group. For example, a Gastroenterologist who is employed by a hospital, or a large medical corporation, will usually make less than a Gastroenterologist who shares ownership in an 8 to 20 man private practice medical group. This differentiation in yearly income also applies for Cardiologists, OBGYNs, Radiologists, Urologists, Oncologists, and Podiatrists. These specialists are capable of making up to 600, 000 dollars a year if they share ownership in a private practice medical group. This number can be cut in half if these specialists are employed by a hospital, or a large medical corporation. Some of the lower paid medical specialists include Neurologists and Orthopedists; this is because their level of expertise does not include evasive medical procedures. Their average work day mainly consists of reading patient scans, and determining if they are a significant candidates for surgery. Now, Internists, Family Practitioners, and Pediatricians are among the lowest paid doctors in America. These medical doctors will usually make between 80, 000 and 200, 000 dollars a year either working for a hospital, or a private practice medical group. This is because their level of expertise does not include costly medical procedures. Their average work day mainly consists of basic examinations, prescribing medications, and referring patients to specialists, which does not generate a large amount of income. On the other hand, Orthopedic Surgeons, Plastic Surgeons, Neurosurgeons, Cardiothoracic Surgeons, Cardiovascular Surgeons, are among the highest paid doctors in America. These specialists are capable of making between 600, 000 dollars a year and 2, 000, 000 dollars a year. Although many of these surgical specialists will usually earn more money in a private practice medical group, surgical specialists are still capable of making up to 2, 000, 000 dollars a year as employees of large university hospitals. This is because the cost of surgery is extremely high, and these surgical specialists generate a large amount of income for their hospitals; therefore, their yearly incomes are extremely high. Now, certain medical specialists who share ownership in a private practice medical group are capable of making up to 1, 000, 000 dollars a year. These specialists include Dermatologists, Ophthalmologists, and Orthodontists. This is because their level of expertise includes cosmetic (non-insurance) care, highly booked appointment schedules, and/or highly expensive medical or surgical procedures. Although the income of surgical specialists in America is relatively similar in large university hospitals, Plastic Surgeons who share ownership in solo-private practices, or 2-3 man private practice medical groups, are considered the highest paid doctors in America. This is because these Plastic Surgeons are only providing cosmetic, or aesthetic care, which allows them to charge very high amounts of money without the involvement of any medical insurance. This is why these surgical specialists are the highest paid doctors in America, with a salary of 1, 000, 000 to 4, 000, 000 dollars a year.

Medical doctors don't typically have salaries, or at least, their salary isn't their only form of income. Most work for themselves and have an office. Since offices and staff are expensive, several doctors will typically join together and share an office and staff. This also helps with schedule conflicts, so if the doctor needs to go on vacation or is sick, another doctor they are partnered with can cover their patients for them.

How much they get paid depends on their clientel. If they are a specialist, they might earn more. If they have a full patient schedule or not also matters. Being a doctor does not mean you automatically have a full load of patients. You have to earn that business, just like any other professional. New doctors start off with few patients, and that customer base grows over time.

I think doctors can make between 100-200k USD a year, and this probably varies by many factors and very well could be much higher for very sucessful doctors. something to consider is that doctors typcially spend huge chunks of their incomes on malpractice insurance to protect themselves from lawsuits. From what I've heard, mal-practice insurance is the biggest operating expense they have to pay for, more expensive even than the cost of their office and staff members.
