During WW2 there was a shortage of many foods. People were encouraged to plant gardens to grow their own foods. People were told that their efforts would help assure victory, since the gardens would allow more supplies to go to the war effort. The gardens were called "victory gardens".

Gardens planted in empty lots, back yards even road islands. The produce was used to feed families, this way the products from the big farms could be used to feed the troops.

Also, it served the purpose of boosting the morale of those left at home, as they could feel they were making a real contribution to the war effort - which they were.
