Harper's Ferry was an important industrial city in the 1850s and 1860s. Its location on the Potomac River upstream from Washington City made it strategic, and waterpower made it important for manufacturing. The largest industry was arms manufacture for the military. Abolitionist John Brown raided Harper's Ferry, capturing a supply of guns and ammunition with the plan to distribute them to slaves (who would presumably revolt and end slavery forever). Brown was hunted down and hanged, after being captured by Col. Robert E. Lee. The important location on the Potomac put Harper's Ferry in a spot vital to both sides in the Civil War and it repeatedly changed hands. It was shelled and blasted with powder, ending the manufacturing of guns there.

∙ 9y agoHarper's Ferry, West Virginia was very important during the Civil War. This was a place where the North was always trying to keep the South from taking over. Harper's Ferry is near the White House in Washington, D.C. Protecting this town also protected the White House.
