it gave legitimacy to the federal government, both as a taxing power and a military power
It was important because it was the first time under the new united states constitution that the Federal government used military force to put to use authority over the nation's citizens.
Washington's use of the federal army to crush the Whiskey rebellion was the precedent for the use of the federal army on the citizenry. Furthermore, it also established the federal government as the supreme law of the land. It concreted the constitution by showing that the federal government's bite is just as bad as it's bark.
The secretary of the treasury, Alexander Hamilton, urged President Washington to use the full power of the federal government to crush the challenge. The president sent 15,000 across the Appalchian Mountains, only to find that the rebels had already disbanded. By his action, Washington sent a clear message to those who opposed government actions. If citizens wish to change the law, they had to do so peacefully, through constitutional means such as proposing legislation or using the courts otherwise government will use force when necessary to maintain order.
