The feathers of Eagles are sacred to Native Americans. They are Creators gift to those with honor. They are used for prayer and given during sacred ceremonies to those who have earned them. Since the eagle is a protected bird in the US, Enrolled Native Americans must get on a waiting list to receive them from the US Game and Wildlife. Native Americans are the only US citizens who are allowed to be in possession of the feathers.

That would be totally dependent upon the tribe. For instance, to a northeastern Indian, it would most likely be a pretty decoration or a pretty gift to give a child who did something well. No real significance To a plains tribe it would normally be given for each time a warrior counted coup or was particularly brave in battle. Women, most likely never wore them. Some they were for a special rite of passage. To other tribes, they were just pretty things that fell off birds.

Feathers symbolize a spiritual aspect to most American Indians. Among Woodlands

tribes, an eagle feather is earned and given for special occurances in one's life.

The eagle is the intermediary for us here on earth to the creator above. Our prayers

waft to heaven from earth like feathers. Feathers are also used as fans in Powwow

dancing--men's & women's have different shapes/designs. Feathers are sacred to

many and to see them wrought into hand made silver jewelry is not uncommon.

Feathers designs are woven into beadwork as well, but usually by members of the

Native American Church only.
