Rafters are usually on 2 ft. centers.
The rafters carry the dead load of the sheathing and roofing material, and the live loads above
For wood framing it can be 16", 19 1/4" or 24 " on center.
It is usually 16 inch.
The easiest way is to use a tool called a pitch finder that can be placed on top of the roof, on gable end soffit, or in the attic under a rafter to find the pitch. This is a special tool and can also be used to find level, plumb, or any angle in between. I have provided a link that goes into great detail on three different methods to find the existing roof pitch.

A rafter is part of a roof, it supports the roof.
use the 17" on your rafter square
A common synonym for "roof support" or "wooden beam" that is six letters long is "rafter."
They each have their place, but on the same style roof, trusses would be stronger.
OSHA does not have a specific standard for the spacing of balusters.

The pitch of a roof is measure in a simple way. Rise over run. By this it means that, given the standard example of a 4/12 roof ,for every 12 inches or one foot of distance or run there is an according rise of 4 inches in height. If you wish to determine this you need to know the length of the rafters and then the height from the center of the rafter to the peak of the roof. For instance if the rafters happen to be 24 feet long that means that the run is 12 ft and if the height from the bottom of the rafter to the peak is 8 feet then you have a 8/12 pitch roof.
Typically, it is the part that extends beyond the building wall, aka tail of the rafter. It creates the area where you can stand under the edge of the roof when it rains.
A rafter could simply be a person who goes white-water rafting. It is also part of the roof of any wooden building like a house. The rafters go from the second floor ceiling (in a 2-story house anyway) to the point of the roof and then large pieces of plywood are nailed over them before the shingles are nailed to the plywood to finish the roof and make it weatherproof.
Need more information. What is the span (the distance from each wall the roff will be resting on) what is the pitch of the roof.
A Jack rafter is a rafter that has the pitch of the roof cut onto one end with a 54 degree angle this sort of rafter is one of several that fit onto a hip ridge. To cripple a piece of timber means to cut it partway through in order to straighten it if this is done to a wall timber it will need to be splinted to restore the strength of the stud
