The Shield of David (or Magen David, מגן דויד) symbolises the Nation of Israel living all over the world. The legend states that it was the shape of King David's Shield, though the symbol itself is not known to have existed in Biblical Times. It first started appearing in the Middle Ages.

In Kabbalah, the Star of David represents the 7 lower of the 10 sefirot known as Zeir Anpin. Zeir Anpin is a repeating concept in Kabbalah and has many applications such as the 6 directions plus the center and the 7 days of the week which are the 6 mundane days plus the Sabbath. King Solomon and King David were both well-versed in mysticism and practical Kabbalah and we know that legend has it that Solomon used to command around the demons while King David himself was attributed as having used divine names in certain situations to save lives. The Star of David was probably originally the Seal of Solomon which is rumored to be the device through which Solomon was able to command the demons around. Aside from all the mysticism, the Jews today associate the Star of David with their Jewish identity and show the world how important it is to them by placing one on their flag.

Answer 2

The first problem with the question is the misnomer. The Hebrew is not Kochav David (Star of David) but Magen David (Shield of David). David was an Israelite King and a renowned warrior. The Shield of David is the emblem on the shield he brought with him into battle with Canaanite Tribes and the Philistines. It became a symbol of the protection that God gave to the Israelite Kingdom under his and Solomon's reigns. In more modern times it is seen as symbol of Jewish unity since Jews consider themselves to be descendants of the very Israelites that David protected with his Shield.

What is the origin of the star of david and its importance to the ancient hebrews?

The Star of David (or Magen David) is a hexagram and was not unique to Judaism. In the Hellenistic world, hexagrams were used by all religions. In the Middle Ages, Jews, Christians and Muslims used them to ward off demons and fires. In the fourteenth century, Jewish mystical texts began to use the hexagram image to represent the shield of God used to protect King David. The Star of David first appeared on a Jewish flag in Prague in 1527 when Enlightenment Jews needed a symbol, equivalent to the Christian cross, to represent Judaism.
