Joseph Smith, Jr. was born in December of 1805. He was raised with a firm belief in the basic tenets of Christianity, but as a young lad was puzzled by the many different interpretations of various doctrines espoused by the many churches of the day. Having read James 1:5 ("If any of you lack wisdom...") he determined to pray vocally to God and ask directly which of all the many denominations contained the truth. In the spring of 1820, at age 14, he offered his prayer and received as answer a vision of God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. The Father introduced the Savior and admonished Joseph to "hear Him."
As a result of this vision, Joseph was given to understand that he would be the instrument for restoring (not reforming) the true gospel of Jesus Christ to the earth. In preparation for this work, he received further instruction from other heavenly messengers, including an angel named Moroni who prepared Joseph to receive and translate an ancient record which would be known as the Book of Mormon.
By Joseph's 25th birthday, he had translated the Book of Mormon, organized the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, received numerous revelations clarifying doctrines that had been lost or corrupted over the centuries, received the keys of priesthood authority that had been lost with the deaths of the ancient apostles, and had begun the work of the gathering of the House of Israel in the last days.
Joseph continued to receive revelation, built one temple and began work on another, and helped build up communities for the gathering of the Saints before his own martyrdom at the hands of assassins in June of 1844. The church he helped restore eventually migrated to the Salt Lake Valley, and from there has expanded to fill many nations around the world. The keys of the priesthood authority that were given to Joseph continue to reside in the current Prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Thomas S. Monson, his counselors in the First Presidency, and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
