Actually the significance of an Elephants trunk being raised up is a symbol of good luck, fortune, and basically optimistic. You might hear various explanations, but none is reliable. There is no significance to either raised or lowered trunks.

In Thailand it is the Elephant that is considered good luck, regardless of the trunk position.

An Elephant Tattoo design is generally considered a symbol of good luck. In many cultures these animals are symbols of good fortune. Elephants once ranged widely all over Africa and Asia and as such, they were familiar creatures with legendary and even mythic qualities, due probably in no small part to the awe they inspired because of their immense size and power. Elephant ivory has also always been highly valued and prized but is now a prohibited product from a threatened species.

In dreams -Perception of your own power, or you are not letting anyone near you. A destructive force (an elephant in a china shop). Warning of one's own repressed sexuality. A need for more patience (being thick skinned). Tusks & trunks are seen as having sexual meaning.

In a tea cup they are seen as symbols of strength, wisdom an a slow ascent to success, as well as long life and endurance.

It is said that yes, elephants with their trunk up are good luck. That is why lots of people always buy fake elephants with their trunks up because it gives good luck to them. This is mostly just a legend though, so it doesn't mean that you will always get good luck from an elephant with its trunk up.
