Some people don't believe, true.

A recent survey asked 3146 earth scientists, "Do you think human activity is a significant contributing factor in changing mean global temperatures?" (Doran 2009).

Overall, 82% of the scientists answered yes. However, what are most interesting are responses compared to the level of expertise in climate science.

  • Of scientists who were non-climatologists and didn't publish research, 77% answered yes.
  • In contrast, 97.5% of climatologists who actively publish research on climate change answered yes.

The more they are involved in research and publishing, the more they agree that humans are significantly changing global temperatures!

The same survey compared these results with data from a 2008 Gallup poll, which found that 58% of the general public believed human activity is contributing to global warming.

The paper concludes:

"It seems that the debate on the authenticity of global warming and the role played by human activity is largely nonexistent among those who understand the nuances and scientific basis of long-term climate processes. The challenge, rather, appears to be how to effectively communicate this fact to policy makers and to a public that continues to mistakenly perceive debate among scientists."

Below are the claims that they make. However, they have all been proved incorrect, out of context or cherry-picked. There is no evidence that global warming is not happening.

1. They point out that Vostok samples show that we have regular 100K year cycles they are the same, or warmer then we currently have.

2. That raw data from NASA shows the oceans are not warming. Algorithms have had to be added to make the data show warming. They question the validity of these algorithms.

3. They point out that CO2 has never caused warming or temperature change. It will always follow temperature changes by hundreds of years. The increase in CO2 levels that are claimed could be caused by the warming we have seen the past 11K years.

4. 1850 was the coolest portion of the last mini ice age. We would expect warming after the lowest temps in hundreds of year.

5. 90,000 plus measurements from the 1800's all showed the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere to be about what it is today. If you had put 330 ppm down as an answer for CO2 levels in college in 1850, they would have laughed at the low number.

6. Thousands of actual climate scientists disagree that man is the cause of the current warming trend. Many say we contribute.

7. Much of the data used to support man induced global warming has been found in error. The Mann hockey stick is not reproducible with actual data.

8. Items such as the claimed melting of the Himalayas are not actually occurring. No melting has been observed expect in one location. This melting is due to human tourism of the "melting glaciers".

9. The GISS refused to provide data to allow an audit. (Despite being publicly funded) When the figures were reverse engineered Doctor Hansen was found to have made "errors" that he has apologized for and admitted.

10. Ocean levels are not rising as predicted or in relation to the claimed warming.

11. The IPCC is made of less than 60 actual scientists. These are the primary promoters of AGW, not the actual science community

12. The proposed changes to help curb AGW provide no actual reduction in CO2 generation.

13. Nature produces 99.7% of all green house gases. Man produces 0.28% The ratios are too small to be significant.

14. The planet showed steady cooling during the largest increases in CO2 production. (1850 until 1934).

15. Every cooling period has started during higher levels of CO2.

16. Every warming period has started during low levels of CO2.

17. Milutin Milankovick predicted the current warming trend in 1917 using solar variation and planetary orbits. Vostok glacial samples show his numbers to be highly accurate and did not include CO2 measurements.

18. Thousands of scientists have a dissenting opinion similar to the 49 NASA scientists that complained last week (April 10, 2012) about NASA's lack of objectivity or the multiple signers of the petition project at OISM.

19. From 1934 until 19774 we saw steady cooling. This cooling occurred despite the steady increases in levels of CO2 emitted by man.

Why do some people think that global warming has nothing to do with human activities?

I believe that some people misunderstand the science and this misunderstanding leads them to believe that trained research scientists must be wrong in their conclusions. In other cases, I believe that some people simply do not want to know that global warming is caused by human activities. Imagine for example someone who thinks that his job could be at risk if we try to prevent any further global warming: such a person would very probably deny the reality of global warming.

Does climategate prove that there is no global warming?

No. Global warming is certainly happening. Certain people who don't want to believe this seized on some emails and tried to beat them up into a story. This is where the term 'Climategate' came from. Several inquiries found there was nothing sinister in the emails.

Why do some people blame the increasing number of hurricanes on global warming?

This is due to the fact that, as the ocean is warmed up slowly from global warming, the probabilty of hurricanes increase.

Why do people not believe in the greenhouse effect?

Most people believe in the greenhouse effect, which is how the earth has kept warm enough for life for millions of years. Some people don't believe that global warming is happening. These (sweepingly) are sometimes the same people who do not trust their government and who do not believe that smoking causes cancer.

Why do some people believe in global warming and some not?

The present phase of global warming, even though rapid by comparison with previous, natural climate change events, is nevertheless so slow that the ordinary person can be unaware that it is occurring. Certainly, the last ten years have been the warmest since instrumental readings began in 1850, but no one has such a long experience and no one can be sure that recent temperatures have been warmer on average than they were a few decades ago. There is good reason for some people not to believe that global warming is really happening unless they actively seek to be informed by climate experts. And there are always some who push misinformation in the hope of convincing the general public that global warming is not really happening. On the other hand, some believe in the reality of global warming because they have taken the trouble to be informed of the clear consensus among climate scientists that it is happening. They are aware that polar sea ice is melting and that sea levels are rising. These are people who may not understand the details of the science, but they accept the advice of scientists.

What do people believe about climate changes and global warming?

People believe that man is causing global warming and climate change by burning fossil fuels and cutting down the forests of the world.Other people believe that global warming is a natural event and man is not causing it.Most believe that it is partially a natural issue that man is having some unknown affect on as well. This is where most scientists fall.Other people believe that global warming is not happening at all.

Why globe warming not getting addressed poses to the future of the earth?

because some people dont believe in global warming

Why do some scientists believe global warming is a threat world wide?

Because it is GLOBAL, not local warming.

Why does global warming decrease temperatures?

True global warming does not decrease temperatures. So, either the model for global warming's effects is hokus-pokus, or global warming as presently claimed, does not exist. Some global warming followers will have you believe that global warming makes the weather "act crazy". If true, then it is not really global warming, is it.

What can you trust about global warming?

Nobody argues that global warming is happening, but there is a debate over what is causing it. Some believe it is caused by humans putting too much CO2 in the air and other people believe that several variables of nature (CO2, sun, etc) are the cause.

Do you Know any environmental issues?

A huge environmental issue right now is global warming, and overall depletion of the ozone layer. Global warming is a hot topic because some people still refuse to believe it is actually occuring.

How do views on the causes of global warming differ among scientists and people?

Among average people, most believe global warming is real and manmade, some believe it is a hoax created by the green energy industry and environmentalists, and a few think it is real, but not caused by us. The statistics prove it is real. I am personally quite sure that any climate scientist who claims global warming is not real or not caused by the burning of fossil fuels is lying on behalf of the companies who sell fossil fuels.

Why do some people want to call global warming climate change?

Climate change sounds a bit more benign than global warming. However, the two things are not the same. Climate change is actually the result of global warming.
