The play 'Wicked' may be considered a prequel to the much earlier book 'The Wizard of Oz'. Among the characters of the original 1900 book edition, and the beloved 1939 film version, of 'The Wizard of Oz' are the Wizard of Oz, the Wicked Witches of the East and of the West, and Glinda the Good Witch. The book by Gregory Maguire [b. June 9, 1954] and the play by Stephen Lawrence Schwartz [b. March 6, 1948] explain what happens in the lives of the Wizard, and the three witches, to have set the events of 'The Wizard of Oz' into motion. The play and the book 'Wicked' give us the perspective of Elphaba Thropp, the Wicked Witch of the West, on life as the sister to Nessarose Thropp, the Wicked Witch of the East and her father's favorite. They also give us her perspective on Galinda, the subsequent Glinda the Good Witch and classmate at Shiz University. And they give us her perspective on being the unacknowledged, natural daughter of the Wizard of Oz. And they also give us her perspective on Fiyero, the Munchkinland Prince who shares her love and for whom the play has a surprise ending.

There are many themes, the biggest one being the question of what is good and what is wicked. (hence the name) Another one is how politics can be corrupt and desiving. one other major theme is to fight for want you believe in, even though it may lead to harder life.

The plot with the Wizard and the Animals and animals can be related to the Holocaust, or any other type of genocide. There is a reference to that when Doctor Dillamond is taken away. The new teacher, who advertises a cage, has a Hitler-style haircut.

There is no good witch of the west.

There is the good witch of the north, who is very princessy, with lots of pink, sparkles, bubbles, and makeup.

And there is the wicked witch of the west, who has green skin, ALWAYS wears black, and can freqeantly be seen with a broomstick and a black, pointy hat.

That good and evil are relative terms that often are misunderstood and applied inaccurately is the main idea of 'Wicked' by Gregory Maguire [b. June 9, 1954]. Specifically, Elphaba Thropp becomes known as the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda becomes known as the Good Witch. According to Maguire's 'Wicked,' such fine lines of distinction are applied, frivolously and inaccurately, to ruin or exalt reputations. The resulting distortions often are needlessly destructive. They unfairly limit the scope of anyone who has been misunderstood and persecuted.
