The binary number system is the base-2 system. Each digit can have one of two values (either 0 or 1). The system that humans use everyday is called base-10 (or decimal), and each digit can one of ten values (0 through 9). In base ten, each place is a factor of ten greater than the one to its right: 104, 103, 102, 101, 100
In base two, each place (or bit) is a factor of two greater than the one to its right: 24, 23, 22, 21, 20 which is 8, 4, 2, 1 (any number to the 'zero' power is equal to one), so if you wanted to represent five in binary it is 101 (four plus one).
Digital computers use binary, because it is more efficient to create an electonic circuit which represents just 2 values (like On & Off, or for magnetic disks North & South or Magnetized & Not Magnetized - I'm not sure which magnetism disks are using, but there are two distinct states that can be stored and operated on).
Not magnetized is never used, magnetic storage is alwaysmagnetized in one direction or the other when it is storing data: whether it is magnetic cores, magnetic tape, or magnetic disk. It is also saturated as getting magnetic media magnetized to any level other than fully saturated reliably is almost impossible.
The only time magnetic media is not magnetized is when it has been fully erased using a degaussing coil.
