The female uses her forelegs to clean out her pouch from time to time, while both the male and female use their forelegs for grooming. The male will use his forelegs when fighting another male, as they have quite sharp claws, or for defence. There have been stories of kangaroos using their forelegs to grab hold of attacking dogs - and there have even been accounts of kangaroos holding dogs underwater when attacked.
The forelegs are also used when the kangaroo walks, which it does when grazing. A kangaroo uses its forelegs to pull itself forward, dragging its large hind legs, which cannot move independently of each other. The forelegs are important for when kangaroos swim, which may occur during flood times, or when the Eastern grey kangaroo swims at the beach. This is something coastal-dwelling kangaroos do quite often.
