What happened in the tornado in Xenia Ohio in April 1974?

The Xenia tornado was an F5. It killed more than thirty people and a significant portion of Xenia. It was a very tragic event. It began in Bellbrook, Ohio at 4:42 pm and moved northeasterly out of Warren county into southeastern Montgomery, and finally into central Greene county where it entered the Arrowhead subdivision and basically destroyed it. It continued through Xenia and the downtown area killing five people in the A&W Root Beer stand and headed for Central State University. When it was over at least thirty-two people had been killed and subsequently two more firefighters died after attempting to fight a furniture store fire two days later. More than 1,600 were injured and thousands were left homeless. Weatherman Gil Whitney was one of the many heroes of that day who spotted the hook echo at WHIO-7 television station and went on the air to alert the viewers.

What was the biggest tornado in the 1970's?

The largest tornado of the 1970's hit Boone and Kenton Counties in Kentucky on April 2, 1977. It was 1.7 miles wide, but because it tore mostly across open countryside it did not do heavy damage and was only rated F1. There were no fatalities. The deadliest tornado of the 1970's was an F4 that struck Mississippi on February 21, 1971, killing 58 also making it the deadliest tornado in Mississippi history. first touched down near the Louisiana border southwest of Cary and tore a damage path 202 miles long (one of the longest ever recorded), dissipating a few miles north of the Tennessee border. The most destructive was an F5 that Struck Lubbock, Texas on May 11, 1970. It caused $250 million in damage, which is equivalent to over $1.4 billion in todays dollars, marking it as the second most destructive tornado of all time. Which tornado was the strongest of this decade could go to any one of the 14 F5 tornadoes that touched down, but one particular candidate of interest was the tornado which struck Xenia, Ohio on April 3, 1974. It was most certainly one of the most intense tornadoes ever recorded.

The Xenia, Ohio tornado of 1974 was produced by a supercell thunderstorm that was part of one of the largest (until recently, the largest) single-day tornado outbreak on record. The outbreak as a whole was triggered when an intense low pressure system pulled very warm, moist air off the Gulf of Mexico and pushed a mass of cool, dry air into it. The result was a series of violent thunderstorms. Wind shear throughout the region set the thunderstorms rotating, allowing them to start producing tornadoes, including the one which struck Xenia.
