That depends on how long the player has been in the major leagues. Rookies are usually given a 'small' salary, somewhere around $400,000-$500,000, which is the minimum ($400,000) a player can make. But once a pitcher has played for a few years and can use his statistics as a bargaining chip, he can make much, much more. Johan Santana, pitcher for the Mets, signed a six year contract prior to the 2008 season for a guaranteed amount of $137.5 million. I don't know that statistics are kept for salary by position but I would think the average salary of an MLB pitcher is several million dollars a year.
