To decide which of the new states could practise slavery, Congress drew a 'line in the sand', along the parallel that marked the Southern border of Missouri.
Anywhere North of that line, slavery would be illegal.
The two sides were equally dissatisfied with the Compromise, but 'equal' is the clue to why it managed to balance the situation, and keep the peace for thirty years.
