Type one diabetes you are born with. It is caused because you islet cells do not produce insulin

Type to you get later in life because of health problems or other reasons.

That previous statement is incorrect. In fact, it's extremely rare to be born with diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes IS caused by the destruction of the beta cells (islets of Langerhans) of the pancreas that produce insulin. This tends to occur in younger people, hence the former name of Juvenile Onset Diabetes Mellitus, but it CAN develop in the 30s and 40s. In these particular cases it is often caused by Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults ... sometimes termed type 1.5.

Type 2 diabetes does tend to affect more people that are older, but over the last 20 years or so, has been recognised [recognized, if you prefer the American spelling] more in younger people. This MAY be contributed to by the obesity epidemic that seems to be hitting particularly Western countries of this world, plus the fact that we no longer work, and play, as hard as we once did. Having said that, it's NOT just weight and lack of exercise that's blighting us, but things that we have no control over, such as ethnicity (people who have African, Asian, Native American, Inuit, Hawaiin, Pacific Islander, Latin American heritage are more at risk of developing type 2 diabetes); family history (if close family members have type 2 diabetes there's a higher probability that you possess the same affected genes); if a woman has previously gone through gestational diabetes with one or more of her pregnancies there's a higher chance that that person will go on to develop type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 is more serious than type 2. In type 1, you have to inject insulin.

In some cases you have to do that in type 2. In type 2, you can be cured by good eating habits and exercise. Type 1 is more chronic.

i have type 1 so i know that it is a condition when your pancres doesn't produce any insulin at all. so this means you need to take insulin shots or even get a pump. a pump delivers the insulin for you. also, when you first get diabetese, you go into the honeymoon stage. this means, your pancres still produces just a bit of insulin by itself. but it still needs lots of help. Type 2 means you are over weight (not always. or maybe always) and you can loose weight and it goes away. and you take pills instead of shots.

Why is diabetes so common in the US?

There are two types of diabetes. The first is Type One, or Juvenile, diabetes. Type One diabetes is found in statistically similar numbers throughout the world. Type Two diabetes, also called adult onset diabetes, is most commonly associated with obesity. This is the type of diabetes that the American Diabetes Association states has reached epidemic proportions in America. I would conjecture that the reason Type Two diabetes is so widespread in the United States is that this country is by far the one that consumes the most junk food, leading to a more obese populace on average.
