The ribs support and protect the lungs, and protect the other internal organs. The term rib cage includes the sternum (breastbone) and the connections to the vertebrae (backbone).

To keep your lungs and heart protected from exterior dangers. Also, if you had no ribs you would find breathing a chore. The structure of the bones allows for your intercostal muscles to work, so they can contract.

The ribs are a part of the skeleton and they protect the heart and lungs.
