Cattle are a mammalian species of herbivorous animals with cloven hooves that have a four-chambered stomach. The word "cattle" is a term that refers to more than one bovine or, colloquially speaking, cow. Cattle are domesticated creatures descended from the truly wild Aurochs and have been selectively bred and used by man for meat, milk and draft work since the New Stone Age.
It is the act of raising and breeding cattle for the production of meat or milk. Beef farming is raising beef cattle for slaughter (meat), and dairy farming is raising dairy cows for milk.
Beef cattle farming start at the cow-calf herd. A beef cow is bred to a bull to produce a calf. That calf is raised on his mother's milk by his mother until he's around half a year or so old. Often beef cows are expected to raise a calf on nothing more than grass in the summer and hay in the winter. The calf, which would've been steered (since I'm just using a male calf as an example here) prior to weaning, and dehorned if he is showing horn buds. He is then backgrounded for several months before being put on a diet to fatten up prior to slaughter. Backgrounding is essentially the feeding of a forage-based diet to young cattle to encourage growth in terms of muscle and bone development. He will pass through several owners during this process. Raising beef cattle is hard to get into specifics since it deals with many different parts, several which I very briefly mentioned above.
Dairy cattle farming is more simpler than with beef cattle. Dairy cows are bred to give birth to a calf in order to produce milk. Calves are separated from their dams after a couple days then sold if they're bull calves or freemartins to be raised as veal calves, or raised as replacements if they are heifers. Dairy cows are primarily bred via AI since raising dairy bulls is a dangerous business, far more dangerous than raising beef bulls. They are raised so that they are milking machines; if they are not producing as much as a producer would like, they are culled.
