I was looking at the 1997 Ford Explorer Owner Guide and all it shows is that
each remote takes ( 2 ) three volt lithium batteries
( I assume that it would be the same as my 1995 Ford Explorer remotes , and the 1996 Ford Explorer owner guide )
( each remote takes two # 2016 , three volt lithium coin style batteries )
On a 1997 Ford Explorer : If each remote takes ( 2 ) coin style lithium 3 volt batteries ( like the 1995 and 1996 models do ) ( it is the # 2016 battery )
Start by replacing the battery in the remote.

I believe the horn is mounted below the battery tray
The positive ( + ) side of the batteries faces down
The optional size battery was the Motorcraft BXT-65-650 battery ( that's BCI group size 65 , 650 cold cranking amps ) In a 1997 Ford Explorer for the 4.0 liter OHV and the 4.0 liter SOHC engines it was the optional battery , and the standard battery if you had the 5.0 liter V8
poor battery cable connection
Its bolted to the inner fender on the drivers side near the battery
because it's a 1997 ford explorer
Did you figure it out? Because I'm trying to figure it out myself.
Put your key in "on" position, and install the new battery.
Each remote takes ( 2 ) coin style 3 volt lithium batteries ( # 2016 )
