∙ 12y agoWhen two or more Vocal melodic lines of equal interest are performed simultaneously, you have either a duet, triplet. quartet and beyond that more likely a chorus, though quintets, sextets, septets, octets and possibly nonets could conceivably be performed for extremely discerning listeners.
When referring to melodic lines that are instrumental, it is generally called harmony. This is a more general term that applies equally to vocals.
In reference to the wording of the beginning of the question "What happens..." one could simply say that the music grows in complexity and up to a point, the listener might enjoy the music in a heightened state of appreciation. "What happens" is a bit vague in implication, thusly this writer inferred vocal lines first, instrumental lines 2nd, and finally the reaction of the audience.

They're not the same - the vocal melody is the main voice in a song and can be completed by other voices (usually fainter) and the melody is the main tune and can be completed by other instruments. The vocal melody can follow the same notes as the melody or not. :)
