is the spider dark brown or black? medium size legs, not like a tarantula, not too hairy? its probably a black widow or a redback, but redbacks tend to have more blobby patterns. dont touch it-the 'X' is probably a warning its poisonous.
I have seen this one as well in West TN. it's not a black widow spider is smaller and has a red X on its back, not a red hourglass on its stomach. It does however look almost as menacing!
Anybody know what it is??
Red hourglass thing?

The Black Widow Spider
Black widow
The black widow is a shiny, jet-black spider with long legs and a red or orange hourglass-shaped marking on its underside. It is about an inch long, including the legs.
The spider that is black with a white crescent on its back is the Brown House Spider. This spider is often confused with the red-back spider.
It may be a Black Widow spider. They are very poisonous and it is probably best not to approach it if you are unsure of the species. Black spiders have a distinctive red "hourglass" shape on its back.
a red back looks almost the same. But doesnt have an hourglass shape. It has a red stripe on top of its abdomen.
My guess is that this spider you saw was either a Jumping Spider (quite possibly a Daring Jumping Spider) or a Parson Spider.

AnswerIf it is predominately black and has the red hourglass on the abdomen, it is a black widow. It is my understanding that the stripes denote either a male or a younger female. I have also seen black widows with red dots on the back. The black widow with spots on its back usually has thirteen and it is called a European Black Widow.
If its black, has a large butt and there's a red shape on its back the resembles an hourglass, then its a black widow spider and they are very poisonous
A black widow. This spider is only a black widow if the entire spider is black, with a round-ball looking back-body, female variety if there is a red hourglass shape marking on the underside of the spider. From the top black widows are completely black.
