Almost any dry wood is fine. Birch has a nice aroma and provides good heat. If you want a longer lasting fire, larger unsplit logs of almost fresh spruce or pine work well. Most hardwoods (of which birch is one) have pleasant aromas.

Softwoods, such as pine and fir will light easily, but burn quickly. Seasoned hardwood (cut, split, and allowed to dry for 6-12 months) will give you the longest lasting fires- Ash, Hickory, Oak, Beech, and Locust are among the best. Do not burn scrap treated lumber- the chemicals used to make it resist bugs and fungi are not good for you.

Hardwoods are the best wood for fireplaces as they burn much longer than pine does.

Ash, Oak, Maple, Birch, Beech, and Walnut are all good wood to burn producing med-high heat and little smoke and sparks. Cherry while it does not burn as well as some of the other hardwoods -it does produce a wonderful aroma.

They need to be seasoned for at least a year before burning.

Hardwood are far better than soft wood as they burn hotter and create less creosote build up. Oak, walnut or hickory are preferred. Hedge or Osage orange when burned on its own actually creates too much heat and can lead to damage to the flue liner. If you have some hedge you want to burn mix it with other wood such as oak about 4 oak to 1 hedge and you will have a long lasting fire that produces are very good quantity and quality of heat. Another word of caution on Hedge or Osage orange is that these woods tend to pop and with out a quality fire screen can lead to safety issues.

Hard Dry Oak is one of the cheapest type of wood you can use to burn in a fireplace. Since an oak is light, it will light faster. The average pricing of 1 Face cord (16 inches inside a 4 ft. tall pile) is $50.

Any soft wood will burn fast and may get too hot. Hedge will burn hot and throws a lot of sparks.
