He wears a US flag lapel pin. Please note that lapel pins do not make one more or less patriotic.
Wearing a Flag Pin on as clothing?
Absolutely. He always has. There are many internet myths which claim he does not respect it, but these have been spread by his political opponents, and there is no credible evidence to support their claims. Whether as a senator or as president, Mr. Obama has always shown respect for the flag, and there is no evidence that he ever was disrespectful towards it. You may be thinking of how, early in his political career, he did not wear a flag pin on his lapel. But this proves nothing: at that time, very few politicians wore a flag pin. Once it became a campaign issue, in 2007, he began to wear one.
This is more of a fashion-oriented question. When it comes to politicians, I would say no. Politicians are to wear one lapel pin: the American Flag.
American flag lapel pins are quite popular. No one is prevented from wearing the flag if they so desire.
First, this is another internet myth, based on some incorrect information. He did not "refuse," and it had nothing to do with his attitude about the flag. When then-Senator Obama was running for office, he didn't wear any lapel pins of any kind, nor did a number of other candidates. But his Republican opponents began saying the lack of a flag pin on Mr. Obama's lapel meant he was unpatriotic, a charge repeated on conservative talk radio as well. For a short time, he ignored the charges because he felt they were just politically motivated, but gradually, as more candidates began to wear flag lapel pins, and as his opponents kept questioning his patriotism, he decided it was best to go along with wearing a flag pin, so that it would not be a distraction in the campaign.
Usually on the right lapel.
It varies. Sometimes he wears an American flag lapel pin, as many political figures have also been doing since 9/11. Sometimes, however, he seems to wear a lapel pin with the logo of the U.S. Secret Service. And there are also photos of him at public appearances where he is wearing no lapel pin at all.
It's actually not a military ribbon. It's a US Flag lapel pin that is shaped like a military bar ribbon.
Not true. That is another of those urban myths, often spread by people who are political opponents of the president. The reality is that many people did not wear flag pins until after 9/11. At that point, some politicians began to wear them now and then, as a visible symbol of their love for America. Gradually, patriotic attitudes (and conformity) took over, and wearing a flag pin was no longer optional-- it began to be expected; and more politicians began to wear them, because their opponents would criticize their alleged lack of patriotism if they did not wear such a pin. Mr. Obama was one of many politicians from both parties who had not worn a flag pin every day, but as wearing them became the new norm in politics, he began to wear one too. You can absolutely see photos of him from 2008 when he is wearing a flag pin on his lapel.
