Muslims feared that their rights would not be protected in a land where Hindus were the majority.

Well that is the simplest answer that anyone can give, but there were many other factors involved and a lot of history behind it. After partition, all the Muslims living in India were forced to move to the newly partitioned-off Pakistan. Conversely, all the Hindus living in that area had to move out of that area and into the country that remained India.
