Richard Nixon wasn't impeached; he resigned before the House of Representatives had an opportunity to take that action. If he had been impeached, it would have been primarily for his role in the Watergate cover-up.

The Republican Nixon re-election committee broke into the Democratic Presidential headquarters at the Watergate Hotel to steal their election strategy plans. They were eventually caught. President Nixon truthfully denied knowing anything about the actual break in. As the Congressional Committee investigation proceeded, it was discovered the President was eventually told of the break-in after the fact and lied about it and decided to cover it up. James Dean, a White House law council to the President, sadly testified that he told President Nixon, "There was cancer growing in the Presidency" and that Nixon's coverup was unraveling. Nixon, after months of blocking and stalling, had no choice but to follow the Supreme Courts order to surrender the audio tapes to the Congressional Committee kept by Nixon in the Oval Office containing all Watergate conversations, including the recordings of Nixon planning to cover up the scandal.
