WWI was a basis for WWII in part because of the Treaty of Versailles. This treaty was harsh toward the Germans. They resented it. Hitler, as Germany's Chancellor, broke all the points in the treaty.

Everyone disliked Germany because of WW1. In Germany there arose a conspiracy theory that claimed that the country had been 'betrayed' by Communists and the Jews. This 'stab-in-the-back' legend was used by German nationalists and the German military to cover up their failure. Hitler used this conspiracy to destabilize the new republic.

The First World War's effect on Germany was devastating. Apart from the tremendous loss of life felt on all sides of the war (22 million men), Germany's economy was in shambles after the numerous capitulations that it was forced to make in the post-war period. This humiliating loss, in conjunction with economic and social instability, set the stage for Hitler's Nazi party and an era of nationalist discourse.

What was the importance of World War 1 and World War 2?

In a nutshell, World War I dissolved the empires of Europe and set the stage for some countries becoming democratic, and others following the path of socialism, fascism, and communism. Its treaties and boundaries led to bitterness that allowed Hitler to rise to power and start WWII. WWI also brought an era of prosperity in the United States and then depression that spread to the rest of the world. World War II set the stage for a divided Europe, resulted in vast technological advances in warfare, and brought the Cold War upon the world.
