Washington's portrait didn't appear on federally-issued $1 bills until 1869, and the current portrait wasn't adopted until the early 20th century, many decades after his death.

Washington was strongly opposed to the portraits of any president, living or dead, being used on American coins and currency. He felt that it was too reminiscent of way most monarchies show the portrait of a king or queen. His favored depiction of Miss Liberty was the norm on nearly all coins for nearly 6 decades. It wasn't until 1909 when the first presidential portrait was used on a coin, the familiar Lincoln cent.

George Washington was "First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen". It was logical he would be pictured first on US currency. He is truly the father of his country, since he was active in the Revolution from its beginning, commanded the army that won the war of independence, chaired the constitutional convention and served as the first President of the United States. He has become a symbol of the United States, a patriotic icon. The green-back dollar with his face on it has also become an icon. It is recognized all over the world.
