There are two methods of generating 3D images using domestic television. One is known as active 3D and the other as passive 3D. Both systems need to show two separate images, one for each eye.

Active televisions display the images alternately in rapid succession. They also emit an infra-red signal for the glasses to switch on and off the filter in each eye in synchronization with the image. Early 3D systems could suffer from flicker where the glasses failed to fully synchronize with the television. This fault has been largely overcome as the technology has matured.

Passive televisions display both images at the same time, using alternate lines of the display. A polarizing filter on the display allows polarizing glasses to filter the two separate images to the eyes. This system can use cheap glasses but the effective resolution is cut in half as each eye will only ever see half the total lines making up the image.

Can you watch 3D blu ray movies on a regular lcd tv?

That depends on the kind of 3D TV you have. If your 3D TV has a 2D to 3D conversion feature than yes, you can watch any 2D program in 3D. LG makes good 3D TVs that are affordable and have 2d to 3d conversion feature (other cheaper makers don't have that feature included). I have a LW6500 model (Cinema 3D line) from LG and 3D-converted images look great.

What if someone with stereo blindness watches 3D TV?

If they are watching it with the 3D glasses, they will just see a normal 2D picture. If they are not wearing 3D glasses, much of the picture will be blurred or appear with ghosting doubles (just as the TV looks to people with normal vision without the glasses on). It is possible to disable the 3D effect in 3D Blu-Ray movies within the player or TV to allow the picture to look normal.

Can I watch a 3D TV without wearing the glasses?

Yes, it is possible. Not all the content shown from a 3D TV will require you to utilize 3D glasses, and you can watch normal programs from 3D TVs. The picture will not be distorted unless you're watching a 3D film that requires special 3D glasses.

Are the glasses necessary for a 3D TV. What is 2D to 3D conversion?

3D TV glasses are necessary to watch your 3D TV. There are some people saying glasses free 3D TV will be available next year, but that is not true. There is only a prototype model available in small sizes and it needs improvement, so glasses free 3D TV won't be possible for many years down the road. There are some 3D TVs that can turn normal channels into 3D and this technology is called 2D to 3D conversion. If you want this feature you have to check whether the TV has this feature or not. If you are going to play games, there are some 3D games available but if not you can always use this 2D to 3D conversion and switch the 2D images to 3D. Because this 2D to 3D conversion feature can convert anything it even turns low quality videos or flash downloaded from the web into a 3D. However, watching regular 2D contents into 3D is different from watching 3D contents that were originally filmed in 3D. It's a different technology so I highly recommend you to buy a 3D blu-ray player and a cable/satelite if you can.
